Tae Kwon Do
Classes are taught for the Lower School on Mondays and for Elementary School on Fridays. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that focuses on the “hand” and “foot”. The children will participate in a “hands on” workshop that includes: stretches, basic kicks, basic Punches and martial art games! Also included will be exercises to increase frontal lobe involvement, while improving your child’s gross motor skills. Balance, coordination, and posture is part of the training. Through different activities, the children will find a harmonious balance between both physical and mental life. Tae Kwon Do is not just a game or a sport, it’s a way of life! Not only does the martial art teach discipline, self-control, self-confidence, and respect, but also it teaches the importance of health and exercise. It will be explained to the children that the physical techniques they learn are for exercise and defense purposes only.
Robotics
Students team up to build and program an autonomous robot using the Lego NXT Mindstorms product to compete in the annual international competition sponsored by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League. They will learn how to affect the robots behavior by using light, sound, touch, distance, and directional sensors.
This is an international competition with regional and state playoffs, and an international meet. This years FLL teams will explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.
Extended Workday and Guided Homework
On Monday afternoons students in Upper Elementary and Middle School stay until 4:30pm unless otherwise noted by their teacher. This extra time helps students to either catch up on assignments or forge ahead on their work plan.
French Club
The French Club is for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students. We read stories, laugh, play games, make French food such as "crepes and Madeleines or clafoutis", and experience some crafts for the purpose of learning a little more French. Sessions take place during the Fall and the Winter.
Computer Programming - Scratch
Scratch is a programming language developed at the MIT Media Lab research consortia in collaboration with UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. The program enables students to create interactive stories, games, and animations which they can then share with one another over the Internet through the MIT Scratch website. By learning to program, students have the opportunity to use the mathematical concepts that are presented in their math classes in a meaningful and motivating context. They see their ideas come to life on the Scratch™ stage. At the same time they learn about the design process. Additional information about Scratch™ and to download the programming environment check out the Scratch website at www.scratch.mit.edu. Join with other Scratch Enthusiasts every Wednesday after school. The program is open to 3rd – 7th year students.
