Welcome Back After Winter Break

It has been such a joy to welcome the children back after our winter break. The classroom is once again filled with familiar faces, soft greetings, and the calm rhythm that comes from being together again. We’ve spent time reconnecting, reestablishing routines, and offering extra support as the children settle back into our days.

Winter Explorations

Our winter work has been centered around curiosity and sensory exploration. The children have been experimenting with watercolor paints, carefully brushing color onto paper and watching shades blend and flow. This work encourages creativity, concentration, and a sense of calm as children explore at their own pace.

We’ve also been learning about Arctic animals and talking about snow and winter weather. Through books, conversations, and simple activities, the children are building vocabulary and understanding while connecting the changes they see outdoors to what we discuss inside the classroom.

Movement and Regulation

Whenever possible, we’ve been taking long walks together. These walks give the children time to move their bodies, observe nature, and help regulate their nervous systems after the excitement of the holidays. Walking together offers moments of connection, conversation, and quiet observation.

Baking Together

Practical life continues to be a favorite part of our week. This week, we baked our forever favorite chocolate chip banana bread, allowing the children to participate in measuring, pouring, mixing, and waiting. Baking supports independence, coordination, and patience, and of course, it’s always rewarding to enjoy something we made together.

As we begin this new season, we are grateful to be back in community with your children. Thank you for your continued partnership and trust as we move gently through winter together.

Ms. Mollie’s Class: A Year of Joy!

As we move through this special season, our classroom has been filled with moments of gratitude, connection, and joy. The holidays offer a beautiful opportunity to slow down and notice the small wonders our toddlers experience each day—whether it’s sharing a smile with a friend, carefully placing an ornament on a tree, or gathering together for songs and stories.

In a Montessori environment, we honor the importance of being present. Embracing these everyday moments with your child-listening, observing, and simply being together-helps build a deep sense of security and joy. The holidays can feel busy, but children benefit most from simple traditions, predictable routines, and time spent together.

We encourage families to continue practicing gratitude at home by naming small joys, offering thank-yous, and modeling kindness. These lessons, though quiet, leave a lasting impact.

As we look ahead to the New Year, we are excited for continued growth, independence, and discovery. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for being such a meaningful part of our classroom community.

Ms. Mollie: Joyful!

As the days grow shorter and the classroom fills with giggles and familiar routines, we are slowing down and enjoying our time together. In our classroom, we are learning about Christmas and Hanukkah and the traditions they bring. These experiences help the children build awareness of the world around them while honoring the beauty of different traditions.

This time of year invites us to seek the little joys. A candle glowing softly, the sound of a song sung together, the comfort of a warm snack, or a friend’s smile during work time—these small moments are often the most meaningful to our toddlers. We are focusing on togetherness, kindness, and enjoying one another’s presence.

With the colder weather, it can be harder to spend long periods of time outdoors. We are still making time for short walks and fresh air when possible, while also supporting the children’s need to move their bodies indoors in safe, purposeful ways. This week, we introduced a Pikler climber to our classroom. The children have been exploring it with great concentration, building strength, confidence, and body awareness at their own pace.

As excitement grows, we also remain mindful of each child’s need for consistency. Toddlers thrive on routine, and this busy season can feel overwhelming. Respecting your child’s boundaries and honoring their schedule—especially sleep, meals, and quiet time—helps them feel safe and regulated. It is okay to say no to extra events, to leave early, or to keep things simple.

Ms. Mollie: Hello December!

Hello December!

This week in our Montessori toddler community, the children were busy with rich sensory experiences, hands-on work, and thoughtful conversations about the season.

One of our favorite moments last week was baking focaccia bread together. Mixing, mixing, and more mixing made the perfect dough!  The children loved pressing their little fingertips into the soft dough, drizzling olive oil, and sprinkling herbs on top. Baking provides such meaningful practical life practice—pouring, stirring, smelling, tasting—and the joy on their faces as we shared the warm bread together made the work even more special.

We will begin our gentle exploration of winter celebrations. Through simple stories, songs, and materials, the children were introduced to Christmas, Hanukkah, and the Winter Solstice. In the Montessori toddler environment, these lessons are kept very concrete and sensory: noticing the warm glow of Christmas lights, exploring seasonal colors and natural items, and talking about the kindness, light, and togetherness that these holidays celebrate. Each child engaged at their own level, taking in the beauty and calm of the season.

As the days grow shorter, we continue to slow down, create cozy moments, and offer opportunities for connection and wonder. It has been a lovely week of learning, discovery, and community.

Ms. Mollie: A New Classmate and Gratitude!

This week, we were excited to welcome a new classmate into our toddler community. The children showed such gentle curiosity—offering toys, making space at the table, and helping our new friend learn the routine. It was a lovely reminder of how naturally toddlers embrace grace and courtesy when given the chance.

We have also been talking about Thanksgiving and the idea of gratitude in simple, concrete ways. During circle time, the children shared what makes them feel happy—family, pets, favorite foods, and special classroom materials. We read seasonal books and practiced using kind hands and thankful words.

The weather has been a big part of our conversations too. As the days grow colder and windier, the children are noticing changes during outdoor play—crunchy leaves, cloudy skies, and the need for warm jackets and hats. We took time to slow down and observe, giving the children language for what they see and feel.

It has been a full and joyful week in our toddler community. We look forward to more discoveries together!

Remember that unless you are signed up for early drop-off, please do not arrive before 8:30… we want to make sure the drop-off line is clear for our older students.

Ms. Mollie: Being Present

This week in our Montessori Toddler community, we focused on slowing down and finding calm in the simple routines of our day. Toddlers thrive when life moves at a peaceful, predictable pace, and we saw so many beautiful moments where children were truly present—whether carrying their work slowly across the room, pausing to observe a friend, or taking the time to complete a task with intention.

One of our highlights was introducing new Grace and Courtesy lessons centered around table manners. During snack and lunch, we practiced our “tummy to table, feet on the floor” posture—an important part of helping children feel grounded and ready to enjoy their meal. We modeled how to sit safely, use quiet hands, wait for a turn, and gently say “all done” and “may I please be excused” before leaving the table.

The children also practiced:

  • Wiping their spots when finished
  • Using polite language such as “please” and “thank you”
  • Waiting patiently while a friend finishes a turn.

These moments are small, but they are the building blocks of independence, confidence, and respect for self and others.

As we slow down together, we’re reminded that toddlers learn best when life is unhurried—and that even everyday routines can be opportunities for connection, care, and mindful presence.

Ms. Mollie: Hello November!

This week, our toddlers enjoyed learning about two very special themes — Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and Fire Prevention Week!

To celebrate Diwali, we explored light and color in true Montessori fashion. The children loved decorating paper diyas, using bright paints to make them shine. We read a simple story about Diwali and talked about how people celebrate with lights, family, and sweets. The children were fascinated by the idea of lighting lamps to bring happiness and kindness into our homes.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, we discussed ways to stay safe around fire in an age-appropriate way. We practiced how to “stop, drop, and roll” in our classroom, and we learned that firefighters help keep everyone safe. The highlight of the week was exploring pictures of fire trucks and using red and yellow paint to create our own “flames” art project.

Our classroom was full of light, color, and learning — a wonderful reminder of how curiosity and care can brighten our world. We also celebrated a friend’s birthday in the classroom, which was a hit!

Ms. Mollie: Pumpkins, Paint and Halloween!

This week was full of joyful seasonal learning in our toddler community! Autumn offers so many natural opportunities for hands-on exploration, and the children embraced every moment.

We kicked things off with a pumpkin-picking adventure right here at school. Toddlers were invited to walk through our mini pumpkin patch, choosing a pumpkin of their own. It was wonderful to see the independence and pride as each child carefully selected one — big, small, bumpy, smooth — all perfect in their eyes.

We also enjoyed a special treat as the older students led a Halloween parade. Our toddlers watched with wide eyes and big smiles as costumes and music filled the air. Experiences like this gently introduce our younger learners to community traditions and help them feel connected to the larger school environment.

Back in the classroom, we moved from observing to creating! Each child had the opportunity to paint their pumpkin, exploring color, texture, and process at their own pace. True to Montessori principles, we focused on independence and creativity — little hands worked hard, and the results were both beautiful and joyfully unique.
