Settling In

Our first full week of school has been busy with math assessments, reviews, and lessons. We’ve been settling into our daily work cycle and have continued to spend time outside whenever possible. The children are very quickly getting used to staying a safe six feet apart while they are working, even when doing floor work. They are even able to do partner work, maintaining distance through use of their six foot measuring ribbon.

We enjoy going outside for our read aloud and writing time as well as at lunch time. We also did our morning meditation and journaling in the outdoor classroom one morning this week, before beginning our work cycle.

The children are working collaboratively in several different groups in the outdoor classroom, building structures. They have worked out a system with each other to trade branches they have collected, to add to their structures. It’s quite impressive to see them problem solve and voluntarily collaborate as they are building and trading. They are an incredible group of students and it is such a pleasure to work with them.

Building Community

Another week of pure joy! Our third year group has been such an asset to our class by mentoring and guiding the younger and new students through this transition period. I am so grateful to have such a helpful group of students. It’s heartwarming to see the connections being made across age groups. If this is any indication for the year to come, we are all in for a spectacular school year!

It is important to intentionally build community at the beginning of the school year. One of our community building activities this week was reading a book about peace, discussing as a class what makes each of us feel peaceful, and then the children represented those ideas on doves. It was so beautiful watching them come up with unique items that brought happiness and tranquility to one another. They will hang in our classroom for the rest of the year to help set a peaceful tone in our classroom.

Middle School: First Full Week!

It felt great to have a full, five-day week! The Middle School had a lot of fresh air and covered substantial content in their classes. Please note that students are encouraged to bring rain gear. We would love to take them out, even if it is raining.
8th year Life Science students are working on the Cell Theory unit. Students have been constructing three dimensional representations of a eukaryotic animal cell. 7th year Physical Science students completed a lab experiment as part of their unit, Combining and Separating Mixtures. The lab required students to determine what methods work best at separating a mixture consisting of iron fillings, sugar, sand, marbles, and water. 6th year Earth Science students are beginning to work on creating their own fossils for the unit, Fossils and Studying Earth’s Past. Students will use clay to make an impression of objects and plaster of paris to make molds.
Math class is off to a great start for all 5 courses. All students received their new textbooks and started working through chapter 1. Pre-Transition (grade 6) has been working on conversion rates and identifying measurement units. Transition (grade 7) has been working on using negative and positive numbers in real world situations and understanding the real number system. Algebra (grade 7 and grade 8) has been evaluating expressions and solving for unknown values while using a substitution method. Geometry (grade 8) has learned about and can compare Euclidean Synthetic Geometry, Graph Theory, and Discrete Geometry.
It felt really nice to get into a rhythm in Humanities classes this week. 6th years had their first vocabulary unit and continued to discuss and write about their summer read, Becoming Naomi Leon. Next week, they look forward to presenting about the independent novels they chose over the summer and learning about Mexican culture. The 7th years have been learning about Chinese history and culture. Their summer novel, Ties That Bind, Ties That Break, gave them a glimpse of changing ruling systems and culture. They researched and learned about the ruling dynasties beginning in 2100 BCE and learned further about the old practice of foot binding, which was mentioned in the novel. 7th years also presented round 1 of current events! The 8th years presented about their independent novels from the summer and also completed their first round of current events. Additionally, they discussed and wrote about their summer read, The Outsiders. Particularly, they discussed character development, the effects of socioeconomics and stereotypes in the novel (and in society at large), and began an essay that will dig deep into a single character.
Until next week,
The MS Team

Mrs. Hood’s Class: Building Trust!

Dear families,

Welcome to FWM 2020-2021 school year!

As we end our first week of the phase-in period, we couldn’t be happier and more amazed with the progress we have already observed in each of our students! This has been a special time of striving to create a peaceful and welcoming environment for your child as this is an important stabilizing period where the children and Guides get to know one another.
Children have been exploring the learning environment and getting familiar with the physical space. Our environment is a place where independence, freedom, and choice of materials are the rule. The children will gradually learn how to handle this choice and freedom while respecting and caring for each other, the materials, and the classroom!

We can’t wait to have the whole group together on Monday and continue this adventure! It’s going to be a great school year!

Enjoy the photos!

Warmly,
Mrs. Hood and Ms. Maria

It’s Great To Be Back!

What a successful week we had! Everyone was thrilled to be back together. The children came energized and enthusiastic, ready to kick off a great school year. We spent an ample amount of time enjoying the outdoors eating lunch, exploring the outdoor classroom, learning new classroom procedures and building community. Everyone did a great job remembering to keep their mask on when inside and also when within six feet of friends outside. It was such a pleasure to watch our new friends become acclimated to the Lower Elementary environment with the help of the second and third years. We are so fortunate to have such a diverse and kind group of children. Thank you to an amazing start to the year and I cannot wait for more learning and exploring to come!

This year we will not have a snack and linen calendar, but we do have a flower and pet calendar. Keeping the classroom beautiful is a big part of the Montessori philosophy. One element of this is fresh flowers in the indoor learning environment. Each family will be asked to contribute flowers and crickets twice during the school year. When it is your child’s turn, please send two bouquets of fresh flowers and a dozen large crickets for Rocky. Your child will cut and arrange the flowers for display in our classroom. You can access the flower and pet calendar here or anytime by visiting myfwm.org under the Lower Elementary Resources.

Mrs. Carroll’s Class: Let The Journey Begin!

The beginning of school is a time of excitement! With that excitement comes a little apprehension for many children. Planning, patience, and nurturing ensures that each child starts the year feeling loved, respected, and safe. Respect and courtesy in our Montessori school is the foundation for everything we do and each child has already begun to learn the following important skills:

  • how to put their work away where they found it
  • how to tidy up after themselves
  • the importance of helping a friend in need
  • the importance of respecting the materials, the teachers, and each other
  • how to tuck in their chair when they leave the table
  • how to walk in the classroom
  • how to be self directed and find their own ‘work’
  • (and most importantly) how to be independent

         ( NAMC, 2010)

We are thrilled to be starting the new school year with your children and look forward to nurturing their independence, respect, and courtesy.

Let the Montessori journey begin!

Mrs. Doyle’s Class: One Step At A Time

The first week of school is filled with so many emotions for children, parents, and teachers. We know it takes time for the new rhythms of school days to become familiar. So, while we are taking one step at a time, it definitely feels like we haven’t missed a beat!

It just a few short days we as a class are learning:

  • how to navigate our way around the environment
  • how to wait for a lesson
  • the routines of our school day
  • how to prepare for snack and lunch independently
  • about being part of a large group meeting by listening and sharing
  • care of self and care of the environment

Our returning friends have been role models for our new friends.  It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to be a leader. It wasn’t so very long ago that they were new to the classroom themselves and they accept this new responsibility with excitement and confidence.

Here’s to new beginnings and a peaceful, fun school year for everyone!

Mrs. Doyle & Mrs. Lopes

Welcome Back to School!

We have had a great first week of school! We spent a lot of time during this short week learning how to keep ourselves and each other safe and healthy. The children have adjusted amazingly well to the new routines and procedures; washing their hands before and after working, playing, and eating, and keeping a safe distance from each other when inside or when not wearing their mask outside. They’ve also adapted nicely to wearing a mask at all times inside. Their resilience is incredible.

We have spent time writing, reading, and journaling this week, as well as doing some assessments in spelling and math to determine where to start with our individualized lessons and work next week. The children enjoyed having a work cycle today and got right down to business choosing work in math, language, geometry, biology, and history.

The children have tools in the classroom to help them stay safe as they learn. They each have a six foot ribbon to stretch out beside them when doing floor work so they know where to set up their work rugs. The children learned how to wipe down a material after use and each material gets a second cleaning by me before being returned to the shelf. Whenever possible, we work outside; the children have enjoyed writing, reading, and listening to our chapter book read aloud outdoors this week. They have easy access to hand sanitizer and sanitizing hand wipes when we are outside and not able to use soap and water.

We have all really enjoyed being together with old and new friends this week. It’s great to be back at school!
