Welcome, Middle School!

It’s hard to believe we have already completed the first week of school. Woohoo! With so much change and excitement, the Middle School team is incredibly proud with this year’s students. Their flexibility and willingness to do what is needed for us to be together is appreciated.

With that, we welcome our 6th years to Middle School, including four new students to the Fraser Woods community! It feels like they have been with us all along and complete the MS family.

This week included a lot of outdoor time, getting back into the learning groove, and smiles all around (even under the masks). Thank you to the MS families for all of your support. It has made coming back together feel safe and fun.

Reminders: Please send your child in with a clean water bottle each day. Also, we are in the woods and outdoors daily, so send in whatever you feel is appropriate for your child and the weather with regards to clothing, sunscreen, and bug spray.

Mrs. Wilson: Fancy Food Prep Impromptu

This week’s snack options gave the children an opportunity to acquire some food prep skills. They seemed to enjoy each lesson as well as using tools they may not usually have the opportunity to use at home. Children are enthusiastic about helping out especially when it comes to cooking.

Banana Slicing

On Monday the children used a fruit and vegetable wavy chopper to make “fancy” slices of bananas to enjoy for a snack.

Eggshell Peeling and Slicing

Eggshell peeling is great for their fine motor skills. It exercises their pincer grasp as they carefully remove the fragile pieces of shells. The multi-step task is also a wonderful way to build concentration. It was incredible to watch the children accomplish this very productive task.

Feel free to add hard-boiled eggs to your next snack list.

Food Tasting: Carrots

Look at these gorgeous colorful carrots the children were able to explore! We talked about how carrots are a root vegetable and grow underground. I cut the carrots lengthwise in half to explore the inside. The children were surprised that, unlike the orange and white carrot, the purple carrot was not all one color. The purple carrot’s middle layer was yellow. Fun Fact: Pretty much all carrots used to be purple!

Mrs. Carroll’s Class: Class News

Our Kindergarten children took a trip to Warrup’s Farm in Redding, CT to learn all about the maple sugaring process. We are so grateful the weather cooperated with us. On the farm, Farmer Bill showed us how to tap a maple tree and how to make maple syrup in the sugaring house. We also got to plant bean sprouts to take home as well as a piece of homemade maple sugar candy.

Our Kindergarten students welcomed the upcoming toddler children for a brief introduction to the Primary environment. They were so excited to share!

Lower Elementary – A Week in Review

The children have been loving our science lessons! Continuing our light lessons from last week, the children explored the concepts that light travels in waves and straight lines. We also had some fun delving into shadow experiments. They learned that shadows are formed when light cannot pass through an opaque body in its path. This was demonstrated by holding an object close to a beam of light from a flashlight. We then held the object further away and turned to its side. The children came to the conclusion that if the object is closer to the light, the shadow is bigger, and if it’s farther away from the light, the shadow gets smaller.

Adding on to our science demonstrations, the children enjoyed learning about the movement of Earth around the Sun. In this demonstration, the gravitational attraction is represented by a bucket, the Earth is represented by the water in the bucket, and Mrs. Sankey represented the Sun. She then swung the bucket in a wide circle around and over her head. The purpose of this was to express that the same force that pushes out on the water and holds it against the bottom of the bucket, is what keeps our world from falling into the Sun. The Earth gets this force as it propels itself through space. What keeps our planet on a steady path around the Sun is the balance between the gravitational attraction of the Earth and Sun and the forward motion of the Earth.

Middle School: Sugar Hills Heist

The Middle School play, Sugar Hills Heist, was a great success this year. With only five days of production time, the middle school students pulled off an entertaining show filled with laughter and excitement. We are very proud of the final product and sad to see it all come to an end. Thank you to all the cast, crew, teachers, and parents for your efforts in making this show such a hit. We appreciate everyone’s encouragement, kindness, and dedication towards having this play be as memorable as it was.

We were learning to sing lots of songs! “Down By the Bay” is a song with silly rhymes allowing children to learn and remember the words. Furthermore, they were making their own versions, such as “Did you ever see (friend’s name) playing the bell, down by the bay?” Children loved to move and sing-along to action songs like “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me”, “Che Che Koolay”. We then slowed ourselves down with “This Pretty Planet”.
