Mrs. Hood’s class: Creative Little Minds at Work!

Art is one of the many ways children express themselves. When it comes to art, it is the process not the product that is important to the child. As adults our goal is to produce a product, but the child interacts with the world differently. The child works to develop self. The focus is on the process not the product. Once a child creates something, they do not feel the need to keep the product. It is the process that gives them satisfaction and inner joy.

In our Montessori environment, art materials teach each skill separately so that the children can combine them on their own:  line drawing with crayons, holding and managing colored chalk, cutting without and with a guideline, stamping, working with clay, painting with watercolors, etc.  All of these skills will be mastered independently and then combined at the child’s discretion in some grand piece of artwork later on in their  development.

Painting on the easel was a new addition to our art shelf this week. There are three main objectives of this exercise. First, the development of hand-eye coordination. Dipping the paintbrush in and out of the paint pot requires a steady hand and a keen eye, working simultaneously. Second, small motor control. Holding the paintbrush and whooshing it across the paper in the direction you want it to go is hard work when you’re small. Think of all the pre-writing skills they are learning just by holding the brush! Third, and I have to say my favorite goal, creative independence! There are no rules when it comes to painting. There is no predetermined product, just a process. The children can plan their own painting from start to finish without any interference from adult rules or directions. The only thing they must remember is to paint only on the paper. Their sense of satisfaction after they finish their masterpiece is just incredible to witness!

Also, we added an exercise for all the children to explore but specifically for our older toddlers to master: Gluing. Learning to use glue develops hand-eye coordination and fine motor planning skills. It also helps your child understand the sensory concept of stickiness. 

This week also, our beloved Art teacher Mrs. Reid visited us and worked individually with each child on a project for Valentine’s Day. Stay tuned as you will hear more about this soon! 

For food tasting we tried some yummy beets this week! The children were able to explore the leaves and were very curious about the root. They also expressed wonder when I cut the beet and they found out the color inside of the beet was purple! Most of them though the beet was blue inside. To our surprise only a few children really seemed to enjoy its taste! This was the first year in my book where toddlers were not excited about tasting beets! Oh well, let’s not give up on this very nutritious vegetable! Toddlers are unpredictable! Who knows.. maybe  tomorrow they will love it!

Storytelling for Language Acquisition


Storytelling and art come together to support language acquisition in Spanish class. Lower and Upper Elementary students apply their reading and listening comprehension skills and use art to convey what they have interpreted. Upon being introduced to a new story, they identify key words by making connections with cognates and context clues.

One of their favorite things to do is write their own versions of the stories. Once we have seen certain vocabulary and target grammar structures in context, we participate in an activity called Story Asking. This is where students are orally given the skeleton of a story while given the opportunity to share their input with regard to character, setting, and plot development. Story Asking gives students confidence and a sense of ownership in the language acquisition process.

Virtual Moving Up Information Night – Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 6:30pm

Dear Parents,

Moving Up Information Night is an important event at FWM.  It celebrates your child’s moving on to their next Montessori education cycle. Toddlers moving up to Primary will enter a three-year learning cycle. Second year primary students will move into their final or culminating year of Kindergarten. Kindergarten students moving up to Lower Elementary will enter their next three-year learning cycle, Lower Elementary students moving up to Upper Elementary will enter a two-year learning cycle, and Upper Elementary students moving up to Middle School will enter a three-year learning cycle.

The education or learning cycles of Montessori classrooms match the range of development of the children they serve. We know that children in each of these multiage classrooms will generally be in the same developmental range. We witness every day, the benefits of the interaction of children of multiple ages and multiple stages in their growth and development.

The continuity of the Montessori environment allows a child to continuously be challenged academically. While the age span in a Montessori classroom is typically three years, this does not limit a Montessori teacher’s ability to help a child reach their fullest potential.  Teachers create additional lessons, bring materials from the next program level into the environment, and arrange for children from one program level to visit the next program level to receive one on one lessons from the teacher. 

The information presented on Moving Up Information Night will prepare you for the changes that your child(ren) will experience as they transition. The teachers from the next level will explain the different elements of the programs, and will introduce you to the scope and quality of the education your child will receive at the next level.

You will receive an email from the teacher along with a Zoom link for their presentation inviting you to Virtual Moving Up Information Night.

Digging Deeper: Collaborative Research

This week we enthusiastically continued our work with ancient civilizations in preparation for our upcoming research presentations. Students started working together in groups of four to study the ancient civilizations of Egyptians, Romans, and Aztecs. On Monday the class collected all of the books from our classroom library on ancient civilizations and divided them up between the different groups. They are following a detailed research guide to help them pull the pertinent information from books their group chose. Art and MakerSpace work will be integrated with their research over the next several weeks, as they make models of their civilizations. The collaboration I am observing on a daily basis is impressive, down to their inclusion of their group members who are working from home.

Other work this week included large and small group lessons. In geometry, the fourths learned more ways to prove a trapezoid’s equivalence to a rectangle and fifths learned to use two formulas to find the area of obtuse triangles. In our large group geography lesson we looked at the causes of local winds and learned about sea breezes and land breezes. We also looked at how the seasons create steady winds that blow towards the equator and variable winds near large masses of land and water. We talked about parts of the world where monsoons are caused by changes in winds and areas of low pressure. Fourth grade language work this week focused on singular and plural nouns and fifth grade focused on regular and irregular verbs.

Thank you for your contributions to our sandwich making community service this week. I’m happy to say that each time we complete this process, we become a little better at it. Your children will be expert sandwich makers by the end of the year! We joyfully made and delivered over 200 sandwiches to St. Vincent DePaul.


Stop Motion Animation

Lower Elementary students dive deep into Stop Motion Animation annually in the MakerSpace. Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. We spend time using a variety of mediums (playdough, clay, legos, paper + pencil, and more.) In class we refer to this as STOMO.

As we fired up our first STOMO lesson of the 2020-2021 school year, I introduced human wooden models to create our stop motion animation. Students enjoyed using people-like figurines, mostly because they could carry out people-like movements in their movies. After our first day, students sat back and enjoyed their mini-movies that they made. You can watch two completed videos on our MakerSpace Twitter account here:

As you may have learned, choice is always available in the second half of MakerSpace classes. Several students chose to learn about 3D printing last week and brought home their first designs of the 2020-2021 school year!

No School-Monday, January 18th Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Standardized test from ERB – the CTP5 (Comprehension Testing Program fifth edition) Lower Elementary-3rd Year to 8th-grade students participate annually. Standardized testing in a Montessori school is viewed as a Practical Life experience. We do not alter our curriculum nor do we conduct test preparation exercises. We understand that a standardized test is only a snapshot and recognize that there is so much more to a student’s learning experience than one test can measure.

Mark your calendars for this year’s testing dates:

  • Middle School Students: Tuesday, Jan. 19th-Friday, Jan. 22nd
  • Third-year and Upper Elementary Students: Tuesday, Feb. 9th, Wednesday, Feb. 10th, Tuesday, Feb. 16th, Wednesday, Feb. 17th

Please be sure students arrive at school on time.  They will have the opportunity for breaks and snacks throughout the morning. Please note that testing ends at different times each morning but typically ends between 10:30 and 11:00 am. The best way to prepare your child is to remind them to approach the testing just as they would approach any other work they do in the classroom, carefully and thoughtfully.  Please make sure they have a good breakfast each morning and get to bed early each night. Thursday, January 21st, Virtual Moving Up Information Night – 6:30 pm. The purpose of Moving Up Information Night is to present our approach to teaching at each level and to help you, as parents, feel comfortable as you preview materials and learn about your child’s next step at Fraser Woods Montessori School. The presentations are made by the teachers from the level your child will be moving up to and you will receive an email from the teacher along with a Zoom link for their presentation.

Middle School: Week in Review

The first two weeks after Winter Break have been filled with recharged mental and physical energy. As you can see, the Middle School classes have been incredibly busy!

**As a reminder, next Tuesday-Friday mornings, the MS will be taking the CTP-5 test. The following is important to keep in mind:

  1. Please be prompt. Drop off is between 7:50-8:10.
  2. Please have your child/children get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast in the morning.

Math

Now that the Math Carnival has come and gone, all classes started learning a new chapter in the UCSMP textbook. Please remember to check Google Classroom regularly for upcoming assessment dates and posted homework assignments.
In Pre-Transition class, students are learning all about multiplication strategies for dealing with real world problems. Students took time this week to understand multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, finding the area of a shape using multiplication, as well as the basic ideas of powers (exponent values). This class is working hard to build their confidence in multiplying decimals, finding the percent of a specific quantity, and evaluating expressions using order of operations.
In Transition class, students had the opportunity to learn about the commutative and associative property for addition and subtraction with integer numbers. This class can successfully calculate absolute values, use fact triangles to depict relationships between rational numbers, and add and subtract positive and negative numbers on a number line. This group of students is working on being more comfortable with solving x+a=b equations and understanding how to graph their solutions on a coordinate plane.
In Algebra class, students were excited to learn the first few lessons of chapter 6 which discusses the importance of slope (rate of change). We have learned how to find the slope of a line given two ordered pairs, writing an equation of a line in slope-intercept form or slope-point form, as well as use the equations of a line to describe real-world situations.
In Geometry class, students are learning how to make conclusions for congruent figures, identify and determine measures for congruent figures, as well as write proofs for the transitive property of equality. This class can now construct equilateral triangles and construct circles through three non-collinear points. Students are going to continue to work on using the perpendicular bisector theorem and practice identifying interior/exterior angles created by a transversal.
Math Joke: Why do teenagers travel in groups of three?………………Because they can’t even.

Humanities
There is some fantastic learning and work going on in Humanities classes. It should be mentioned that with the unprecedented events occurring in the United States at the moment, Humanities classes have been having daily current events updates and discussions during part of their classes. The 7th years named this now-daily part of class, “History in the Making”. Fraser Woods is lucky to have such mature and curious students who denounce violence, have respectful dialogue, and ask thoughtful questions.
6th and 7th grade classes are well into their research projects surrounding the theme, Great Discoveries. Some of the topics include Pompeii, the Chicxulub Crater, Stonehenge, and the Nazca Lines. Students completed topic proposals, thesis statements, questions to guide research, and have been spending time researching. Additionally, 6th year students have been studying the geography of the Fertile Crescent that was the location of Mesopotamia. The Sumer people will be the first they study from this region. 7th year Humanities students wrote essays and discussed the notion of leadership which will be leading into their look at the the rise of Adolf Hitler. They also read about the history of anti-Semitism.
8th year students have begun Expert Projects. Topics have been selected, thesis statements were written, and students are working on writing the questions to guide their research for the next several months. 8th year students have also begun discussing the plot of this year’s MS play, which is shaping up to be exciting. Finally, the 8th year students researched and completed a presentation surrounding the causes of the American Revolution.
Science

6th year Earth Science students have been conducting experiments that represent what causes seasons and a difference in the amount of daylight throughout the course of a year. In order to represent this understanding, students constructed their own model of Earth using a Styrofoam ball and toothpicks (Earth’s axis). Students rotated their models around a lamp (sun), monitoring the difference in lit portions of their model as it orbited around the light.

7th year students just finished constructing and testing their catapults as part of our Kinetic Energy unit. Each student spent two days constructing a catapult out of Popsicle sticks, a plastic spoon, and rubber bands. Students tested their design several times and followed up with a reflection for potential changes to enhance performance. Last week, 7th year students also demonstrated their working knowledge of potential and kinetic energy by building a “roller coaster” out of halved pieces of foam insulation. Students were able to express their creativity in designing how many twists, loops, and ramps they wished to include in the design. After completing it, students were able to determine the kinetic energy of their design by calculating the velocity and mass of the marble.
8th year Life Science students are currently exploring the unit, Nervous System. Within this unit, students are understanding what our peripheral and central nervous systems are composed of and how each plays a role in everyday functions. Students were able to perform several activities that tested their senses in relation to their own nervous system. These activities included testing reflex speed by catching a falling meter stick without warning, submerging hands in ice and warm water simultaneously, eye test, and reflex test. Time was provided for students to openly discuss how heavily we rely on our nervous system from the simplest of daily functions to the most difficult choices we are faced to make.
