Primary and LE: “Los colores”; UE: “ABCs”; MS: “Me gusta…”, “Partes de la casa” and “Dia de los Muertos”.

This month at FWM students kept working on their Spanish greetings and the calendar. In addition, they are improving their Spanish vocabulary. Students from Primary, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary and Middle School listened carefully to the Spanish books and songs and participated in interactive games that were displayed during class.

Primary students became engaged in learning the six basic colors in Spanish such as: rojo, azul, amarillo, verde, anaranjado y morado through Spanish Montessori lessons that were left on the language shelves of each class for the students to practice for the entire week.

Lower Elementary students also learned twelve basic colors in Spanish such as: rojo, azul, amarillo, verde, morado, anaranjado, blanco, negro, gris, café, rosado y crema. They learned these colors through Spanish Montessori Lessons that were presented in class and left in their classroom to be practiced during the week.

Upper Elementary Students put in hard work learning the Spanish ABCs and recognizing and separating the words into syllables which helped them to be able to read short stories in Spanish.

Middle Schoolers learned to talk about their regular daily activities, tell where they are from and what do they like or don’t like to do. They also learned how to describe rooms of the house and household items, indicate the order of things, and how to describe themselves and others. Finally, they learned how to identify people and things.

In addition, Upper Elementary and Middle School students learned about the Culture and History behind the celebration of “Dia de los Muertos” and how widespread this celebration is in Spanish speaking countries.

PE: Primary Obstacle Course Fun!

The Primary students enjoyed an obstacle course comprised of gymnastics mats, hoops, an agility ladder, and a balance beam.  The obstacle course helped students practice their gross motor skills. They were jumping in and out of hoops, performing a forward roll on an inclined mat, walking on a balance beam, crawling under a bridge, tip-toeing through the agility ladder, and jumping and landing on a mat.  We started the classes with a moving train run around the gymfollowed by a 10 minute pumpkin tag warm-up using pool noodles. We cooled down with fitness exercises, yoga, and stretches at the end of each class. Throughout our gymnastics unit, the children are enhancing their social skills, developing strength and coordination, and gaining self-esteem and confidence.

During each class, the children practice learning skills. We practice observing, waiting our turn, and following directions.  Improving all of these skill areas is helpful for those children still learning how their bodies move. Our lessons help them become more comfortable and happy with themselves as they continue to grow.

Spanish Class

Learning another language is beneficial for memorization development in a child’s brain, making it more efficient and flexible. This month children at Fraser Woods Montessori school were able to review and learn basic Spanish phrases and words.

Primary and Lower Elementary students recalled greetings, self-introductions and how to express their basic feelings in Spanish. In addition, children were able to practice the new words learned in a lesson that was placed in their classroom.

Upper Elementary students, as well as all the students had a review of Spanish learned in previous years. Also, they are learning the Spanish alphabet, practicing handwriting, pronunciation and more vocabulary.

Middle school students are working on learning basic grammar, listening, conversation and pronunciation using regular activities related to their interests. On Fridays we have Spanish enrichment where they can learn more about Spanish speaking countries, their history and traditions, using interactive games, videos and other fun activities in class.

The Fab Lab!

With the new year comes new opportunities and thanks to the generous donations of our community a new creative space for kids to explore their creativity. The Fabrication Lab is open and operating with our laser cutter, 3D printers, CNC machine and robotics all in full swing!

Thanks to the Fab lab opening I have had the opportunity to offer an entirely new class to the upper el- Middle school that is focused on the intersection of coding and robotics. Using the modular kits made by lego students are able to design, create and code a robot with virtually any function. The students can use a number of sensors including proximity, color, touch and gyroscopic sensors to have the robot interact with its surroundings. This flexibility lets the students creativity explode. So far we’ve seen cars, remote controlled robotic grippers, lunar rovers and more. I’m very excited for this opportunity to let the students experience coding and robotics early as they become more and more ubiquitous in our world.

Sketchbook Making, Color Explorations and More!

Young artists from Primary through Middle School have been busy gathering inspiration from the colors of autumn in many creative ways, as well as making their own sketchbooks, and working on our large-scale Art Studio weaving!

Each student in Lower & Upper Elementary and Middle School made their very own sketchbooks using simple bookbinding techniques. These sketchbooks are used at the beginning of each class for “silent sketch time” in which students draw for a few minutes at the beginning of each class to help them transition into the creative mindset.

Primary and Lower Elementary artists created works of art inspired by colorful autumn leaves and various pumpkins and gourds of this season. Some processes and techniques we’ve explored thus far include tracing leaves, closely observing the shape and texture of gourds and drawing what we see, cutting paper and collaging, as well as mixing warm colors with watercolors.

Upper Elementary artists gathered inspiration from the end of summer/early fall flower, Marigolds. Using acrylic paint, young artists carefully mixed the colors they observed in the flowers: from dark reds to bright yellows. Students will then create marigold flower collages by cutting and pasting from these painted papers.

Middle School artists have been busy exploring color theory. Our focus has been on mixing a range of skin tones using acrylic paints and simple color theory techniques. To mix skin tones, students begin with varying amounts of complementary colors plus white or black, and continuously mixed until the right shade or tone is achieved. The magic of this color mixing process is that it allows each child to discover the unique rainbow inside of both their own and their classmates’ beautiful skin!

PE and Sports: Soccer

At the beginning of PE class and Sports class, students jog laps and participate in fitness activities. Warm-ups at the beginning of class prepare the body for physical activity; they are used to increase body temperature and heart rate. Other warm-ups the students participate in are tag games.  Tag games help develop a variety of physical skills including movement, agility, balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.

This past month, students in grades K- 8 have been practicing and participating in the team sport of soccer. Did you know that soccer is the most popular sport in the world?  Soccer is fun, inexpensive, and easy to play. Soccer is played by over 265 million people worldwide and has about 3.5 billion fans! If you or your child have never played soccer, go give it a try!  All you need are some friends, a ball, and a large space.

During our soccer unit most of our focus was on developing foot-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Students worked on passing, dribbling, trapping, shooting on goal, and simple game rules. The focus at the Middle School level is to develop player performance. The four components are technique, tactics, fitness, and sportsmanship.  After the skills were taught, friendly games were played at the end of class.

The largest soccer tournament in the world will be held this year!  The World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 20th to December 18th!  USA plays England on Friday November 25th.  Let’s go USA!!!

Warm-Up Games & Wiffle Ball in PE!

Lower and Upper Elementary participated in a Wiffle Ball Unit. Students learned how to run the bases and how to hold a wiffle ball. In addition, they learned how to throw and receive a ball, as well as batting off a tee. Students also had a choice for the ball to be pitched to them instead of using the tee. Throwing a ball is not just physical, it is also cognitive. A child has to plan how much force to put into each toss, where to aim to keep the ball from going too high or low, and when to release.  The benefits of wiffle ball include:  improved balance, coordination, strength and stamina, motor skill development, social skills development, improved self-confidence, and sportsmanship.

Before the start of PE class, students participate in warm-up running games. Some favorites are:  Rock, Paper Scissors, Earth Day Tag, Sports Tag, Ice Cream Tag, and Pluck the Turkey.  Once a week we run laps for our warm-ups for our 100 Mile Club.  Warm-ups in Physical Education prepare the body for movement.  A warm-up allows the body to gradually increase its heart rate and body temperature which would reduce the risk of injury.

Art Show on Display!

Students from Toddler through 8th grade have been hard at work creating and finishing up their artwork for our upcoming  all-school Art Show! The show will be on display starting Monday May 9th through Friday May 20th. Parents are welcome to come view the exhibition between the hours of 9am-2:30pm. The Art Show will be set up around the walls of our Zen Garden. You will see artwork as you enter, beginning along the walls of Mrs. Semmah and Mrs. Lopes’ classrooms, in the glass display cases in front of the Zen Garden, and continuing through the hallway past Lower Elementary towards the Commons where the show ends.

Putting together an Art Show is an all-encompassing creative experience for our students that addresses many aspects of Art such as; the making of the artwork itself, learning about masterworks, preparing artwork for showcase, titling artwork, collaborating, viewing and interacting with artwork, and understanding art display within an architectural space.

I hope you find a time to visit and see the children’s beautiful works on display! Bravo young artists!
